NOVEMBER GARDENING WITH RED BARN GARDEN CENTER

November is an ideal time to plant hardy trees and shrubs.  Planting shrubs and trees with fruit, nuts or berries is an excellent food source for the birds and other wildlife.  Some of the best shrubs for Central Texas are American Beautyberry, Leyland Cypress, Burford Holly, Possumhaw Holly, Yaupon Holly, Cherry Laurel, Pyracantha, Mahonia, Viburnum and more.  Plant shrubs and trees now to give them a chance to establish before the next hot summer.

There is still time to plant Pansies, Violas, Snapdragons, Cyclamen, Alyssum, Dianthus, Kale and others for great winter color. Visit our store for a variety of colors and sizes.

You still have a little time to plant Shallots, Mustard Greens, and Lettuce among other fall vegetables. Transplants are still available at our nursery. Onion sets and Leeks will be available soon. Seed Potatoes will be available in January and early February.

November is a good time to plant bulbs.  Plant Amaryllis Bulbs into pots using a well-drained potting soil.  Allow 1 inch clearance from bulb to pot.  Make sure the bulbs neck is above the soil surface.  Place in a sunny window, keeping soil evenly moist and rotate 1/2 turn every few days to keep the stalk growing straight.  Flowers will appear between Dec. and early January.  Paper White Narcissus may be planted in pots this month and grown for winter color.  Narcissus is very fragrant.

Don’t forget to fertilize your lawn if you have not already done so.  We carry Medina, Texas Tee, Micro Life, and Lady Bug Brands of all natural fertilizers that are safe for children, pets and the environment.

Lawn care should be fairly easy this month. If you over seed with annual rye grass seed, keep the rye grass cut to about 2 inches in height.  Elbon Rye can be grown in vegetable gardens as a fast growing cover crop to deter harmful  nematodes  and can be turned under for green manure in early spring.

Get ready for that unexpected early frost.  We have pre-cut frost cloth or sell by the foot.  It lets the light in and helps protect delicate plants and vegetable on those cool nights.

Fresh Christmas Trees should be here the week of Thanksgiving. Our Christmas trees are shipped from the high elevations of Oregon.  They are fresh cut and shipped the same day.  We take good care of them by giving them a fresh cut the day of arrival, keeping them in fresh water, and spraying them with water 3 times a day to ensure needle retention and freshness.  We have several sizes and types for you to choose from.  Red Barn also has Wreaths and Garland available starting the week of Thanksgiving.

Now is the time to give thanks for what we have and care for those who do not.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season!
